Prerequisite  [How to Rip DVDs] or [How to Rip CDs]

(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)

Pakkiso is a tool used to compress cd/dvd images so that the output is identical on any machine.
in short this means that if one person has a game(or any disc image), they compress with pakkiso, and another person has that same game, they compress with pakkiso, both of their pakkiso'd 7z files will be identical.
this has multiple advantages. If one uploads a Pakkiso'd game and at any time any part of that file gets corrupted there now is no longer a need to repack the entire thing nor upload the entire thing again, that same person could just pakkiso the image again and the 7z will be the same or anyone else with that same image could also do the same...

Quote
How to use under Windows

If you have set up PakkISO using the installer, simply right-click the game folder and click either "PakkISO" or "UnpakkISO" to compress or decompress the disc image contained in that folder. Also there are commands with the "(batch)" comment to pack and unpack all games inside of selected folder (e.g., unpack whole set). To update sets packed with previous versions of PakkISO and PackISO use command "Repakk".

Alternatively, if you are using the command-line version:
    * To compress a game just drag the game folder onto pakkiso.exe and it will automatically compress it.
    * To uncompress a game just drag the game folder onto unpakkiso.exe and it will automatically uncompress it.

for use in the upload tutorial...NEXT STEP--->>>>>>

I can see the advantages, but will it split the files like 7zip? Or do we have to do that with QuickPar? Also, this is essential if two people have the same game, but do they have to be completely identical? What if 1 person uploads his copy, while another downloads the scene release - will the ISO be identical or do the sources have to be the same as well? More nfo please..

and Thanks

pakkiso does create one large 7z file, but that does not matter since inside of the 7-zip File manager you can choose to split that file and then yes it will extract if you use the .7z.001 file like normal, only difference is that you do have to use pakkiso to compress then open 7zFM choose your 7z archive, file> split file>7m, done.
or like you said you can always split that file with quickpar, however splitting a 7z file with quickpar will render the ability of the .7z.001 file to be extractable via 7zFM, you must first combine with quickpar in order to extract the 7z that has been split via quickpar. My method above of using 7zFM is preferred.

and yes the pakkiso'd file will match the scene iso IF the scene rips that game correctly and IF they do not patch the file, most of the time this is the case but we all know sometimes the scene can fuck shit up.  Wink

there are other utilities that use this same idea...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/trrntzip/  torrentzip, uses zip compression, creates identical zip files on any machine
http://sourceforge.net/projects/t7z/  torrent7zip, uses 7-zip compression, this is used mainly for rom files as it does not contain ecm like pakkiso does.
altho you could use t7z for images, pakkiso is preferred since it was made specifically to handle disc images, auto-ecm's for cd compression, uses lossless ape for audio, etc.

Yeah, splitting the file with the 7zFM afterward is a great idea.

edit: I checked out the 7z split method, and with CD games it is definitely easier to use Quickpar to split the .7z. With the 7zFM method would need to select the .7z.001 file and choose 'file>combine' files for UnpakkISO to work properly. It is probably easier to do this using Quickpar, especially if you have autorepair enabled.

That might be easier for some people, but in the long run...if one account goes down then the pakkiso upload will no longer need to go in the dead links, we just need someone with the same game. This is especially good for new uploaders that do not make backup accounts.

yeah and again, this method takes TWO FUCKING CLICKS and you have the image compressed.  no messing around with settings or any bullshit and it is in a standardized format and will match other people's 7z files.  how the hell can u not like it?

Because the abbreviation is called "Pakki" which in some countries is a derogatory term towards Pakistan peoples...

"Damn Pakki.. never works right even after numerous tries!"

lol it was a wild guess

ok, so i'm willing to give this a try for my next upload. I'll use Pakkiso to make 1 large 7z, and split that using Quickpar, like OTW said, right?

I've succesfully uploaded The Urbz with Pakkiso, how would you go about confirming that Pakkiso's claim of being the exact same file on every computer. Would someone want to try that??

The only way to really tell is if somebody rips their disc into the computer and compares the CRC of the pakkiso .7z. If you want to duplicate the split quickpar files then the split file size and source block count slider settings must be the same in quickpar.

Not saying that less popular games should not use Pakkiso, but the best way to check Pakkiso is with a more popular game (or a game where two people can confirm that they have a copy), so that some one else can insert their disc and check the CRC.

i don't think it really matters what type of iso is pakkiso'd but if all of our uploads on here were pakkiso then it would be much easier to replace them, especially if only a few gmail accounts go down.
in the past it was necessary to re-upload the entire game, but with using pakkiso now you would only need to re-upload the parts that are missing since the 7z will be identical to the one created before.

you could use any storage archive to house the pakkiso'd 7z. unadvantage being that you must extract twice.
not to mention that it would not match any known crc for the archive.
